AI can undoubtedly extend human capabilities in remarkable ways. But it has already begun to disrupt the integrity of education while threatening jobs and amplifying human bias through its algorithms. Nurturing a responsible approach to this technology involves monitoring the design of these systems and their societal role, all while keeping in mind a slew of important ethical considerations. Recent AI developments, like large language models (LLMs), raise questions about the need to change the AI paradigm and the role of developers. In the deployment of AI, trust, cooperation, and the common good are critical. In conversation with EVA KONZETT, political editor at FALTER, VIRGINA DIGNUM will highlight why regulation and governance are essential as stepping stones for innovation.
VIRGINIA DIGNUM is a professor of responsible artificial intelligence at Umeå University, Sweden, where she leads the AI Policy Lab. She is also a senior advisor on AI policy to the Wallenberg Foundations and a member of the United Nations Advisory Body on AI, the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI). She was a member of the EU’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence and leader of UNICEF’s guidance for AI and children. Her new book, The AI Paradox, is planned for publication in late 2024.
