PLANETARY SOLUTIONS FOR PLANETARY PROBLEMS

NILS GILMAN IN CONVERSATION WITH MISHA GLENNY
SONNTAG, 29.09.2024 / 12h30

AKADEMIE DER BILDENDEN KÜNSTE WIEN, SITZUNGSSAAL

The pressing problems of our age––from deadly viruses to climate-changing carbon molecules and harmful pollutants that cross the globe unimpeded by national borders––can only be solved through multilateral cooperation. Could a new network of government mechanisms and institutions be put in place and cooperate effectively on levels from the local to the planetary? In conversation with IWM Rector MISHA GLENNY, the co-author of Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises (Stanford University Press, 2024) and academic director of the Berggruen Institute NILS GILMAN will present a new framework for addressing what he calls “the planetary condition.”

NILS GILMAN is the COO of the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles and deputy editor of Noema Magazine. A historian by training, his career has included stints as a tech industry executive, national security scenario planner, and chief of staff to the chancellor of UC Berkeley. He is the author of Mandarins of the Future (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2004), Deviant Globalization (Continuum, 2011), and Children of a Modest Star (Stanford University Press, 2024).
